Author Guidelines

Submission of papers:  All manuscripts must be written in clear and grammatically correct English and (the language and publication) be submitted to the African Journal of Technology via e-mail to: yashon@mu.ac.ke or ajt-authorsupport@mu.ac.ke.

Authors are advised to transmit the text and art of the manuscript in electronic form. Each manuscript must be accompanied by a cover letter outlining the basic findings of the paper and their significance. Papers for consideration should be sent as MS Word attachments to the above e-mail address and a PDF file copy for reference purposes. Manuscripts sent by physical mail will not be considered since all refereeing and publication are done electronically. Detailed notes on how to contribute are found on the journal’s website at: http://mu.ac.ke/ajt/index.php/ajt/

Books for reviews should be sent to:

   Prof. Yashon O. Ouma (Editor–in–Chief)
   The African Journal of Technology
   Moi University, School of Engineering
   P.O. Box 3900–30100,
    Eldoret, Kenya

Original material:Submission of an article implies that the work described has not been published previously (except in the form of an abstract or as part of a published lecture or academic thesis or as an electronic preprint that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that its publication is approved by all authors, and that, if accepted, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, including electronically without the written consent of the copyright-holder.  A statement to this effect should be included in the covering letter which accompanies the manuscript.

Types of contributions: Original research papers and occasional reviews, short communications, letters to the editor and news items

Corresponding author: Clearly indicate who is responsible for correspondence at all stages of publication, including post-publication. Ensure that telephone and fax numbers (with country and area code) are provided in addition to the e-mail address and complete postal address. Full postal addresses of all co-authors must also be included, in the format stated in the Manuscript Preparation Structure section.

Editorial requirements: Contributors should submit the names and postal addresses of three possible reviewers. Suggestions should not include previous or current co-authors. The referee selected by the editor may not necessarily be from the list.

Upon receipt of an article, authors will be asked to sign the ‘Journals Publishing Agreement’. Acceptance of an agreement will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. An e-mail (or letter) will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript together with the Journal Publishing Agreement form with the Authors’ Rights.

Manuscript Preparation

General: Editors reserve the right to adjust style in line with the AJT house style. Authors should use Word, Word Perfect or PDF files for the text of their manuscripts and follow the journal style as far as possible. Authors can consult a recent issue of the journal (http://mu.ac.ke/ajt/index.php/ajt/) to familiarize themselves with the journal’s style, layout and conventions.

Structure: Typed manuscripts should follow the following order: title, authors, and affiliations, abstract (should not exceed 300 words), key words, main text (divided into logically structured and numbered sections and sub-sections), acknowledgements, appendices, references, figures, figure captions and then tables. Tables and figures should not be part of the text but as captions referenced at the end of the manuscript. Acknowledgements should be collated in a separate section at the end of the article and should not be included on the title page, as footnote to the title or otherwise.

Double spacing and wide margins should be used (avoid justification i.e. do not use centered and constant right hand margin). Each new paragraph should be indicated. All pages should be numbered consecutively using font size twelve or ten and standard fonts. Footnotes should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers.

Abstract: A self-contained abstract outlining in a single paragraph: the aims, methodological approach, scope, results and conclusions of the paper must be provided.

Keywords: Immediately after the abstract, authors should provide a maximum of six keywords (avoid, for example, ‘and’, ‘of’). Abbreviations should be introduced, used sparingly and only abbreviations firmly established in the field may be eligible.

Mathematics and symbols: Mathematical symbols and formulae should be typed. Particular attention should be exercised in identifying all symbols and in avoiding ambiguities. Distinction should be made between the number one (1) and the letter I, and between zero (0) and the letter O. Vectors and tensors should be marked clearly on the manuscript. Equation numbers should appear in parenthesis and be numbered consecutively. All equation numbers must appear on the right-hand side of the equation and should be referred to within the text. The following sequence of parentheses should be used :)]}

Units: AJT has no rigid rules concerning notation or abbreviation but each paper should be self-consistent as to symbols and units which should all be properly defined.

References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text make references using a number in square brackets on the line (e.g. “since Sitre and Clever [1] have shown…”), and the full reference should be given in a numerical list at the end of the paper.

References should be given in the following format (for journal papers, textbooks, and conference proceedings respectively):

Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and suitable captions given to them. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript (for example in graphs). Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred by superscript lowercase letters.
